Directors and Volunteers Vacancies

We are currently looking for new Directors and Volunteers to join the Oxfordshire Credit Union (OCU).

Like all credit unions, we depend on the services of unpaid Directors and Committee members to provide strategic direction, ensure legal compliance and represent the membership.

Volunteering is a great way of developing your existing skills or learning new ones. Many people find that volunteering for the credit union helps them to find work or make progress in their careers. Financial, secretarial, marketing, project management and publicity skills are particularly welcome.

Volunteering usually means giving up a few hours each month during the day and evenings. All volunteers receive on the job training and there are usually opportunities for formal training through the Association of British Credit Unions Limited.

If you have some time to spare, and are willing to share your enthusiasm and commitment, please send an email to stating whether you would like to join the OCU Board or get involved as a volunteer.

Current positions available:

  • Company Secretary (Board position)
  • Director – general (multiple Board positions)
  • Volunteer – general (multiple positions)

What happens next?

One of the current OCU Directors will contact you to discuss the positions and projects you can get involved in.

Thank you for your interest and supporting Oxfordshire Credit Union.

OCU and Unison City, Oxford

OCU was delighted to be invited to the Oxford City Branch of Unison’s AGM at Oxford Town Hall, recently.  You can see two members of the OCU team in the picture below, listening carefully to proceedings! One of our board members, Mark, gave a short presentation about what OCU offers.  Then, during the breaks, we chatted to Unison members, who gave us a warm welcome.

OCU works closely with Unison at Oxford City branch, as Oxford City Council staff can sign up for payroll deduction to their OCU accounts, something Unison helps to promote to their members. There are more details about the Oxford City branch of Unison here:

OCU at the John Radcliffe Hospital

OCU were at the John Radcliffe Hospital on 15th March, to raise awareness of the OCU in particular, and credit unions generally, with JRH staff and members of the public, and we had a lot of good conversations.  Anyone employed by the Oxford University Hospitals Trust can sign up via payroll deduction, making both saving and repaying loans really easy.   The option of paying in by standing order is of course also open to all those who meet our common bond criteria of living or working in Oxfordshire.

AGM set for Saturday 22nd April 2017

Members will shortly receive their official Calling Notice for the Annual General Meeting and the Board of OCU will be inviting all members to join us at the Friends’ Meeting House in St Giles in Oxford on Saturday, April 22nd at 11.30.  This is a welcome opportunity for all of us to meet in the flesh, for the Board to report back to members, and for members to give their views or ask questions.  This year the Board will be recommending that a dividend be paid to members and this will require the approval of members present.

We also look forward to welcoming Steve Eyre, chair of Swan Credit Union, who will give us an overview of how this neighbouring credit union – also part of the CUS ‘family’ – operate and how we can learn from each other.

Promoting OCU at the Coop and at Unipart

We are always keen to spread the word and find new members – so that they too can save and borrow with an ethical financial provider.  We’ll be promoting OCU at the Coop at Chipping Norton on July 9th and at Unipart in Garsington Road, Oxford, on July 7th and/or 12th.  Can you help us for an hour or so on any of those days?

If so, please email or call David on 07857 469548.

Would you be able to help us run your credit union?

We are currently looking for several new Board members to help to steer and run OCU.  We have had some interest but would welcome more!  You may see this advert through OCVA or elsewhere.  A job description and person specification are available on our Volunteer page.

We are always looking for volunteers to help in all sorts of ways, not least getting out and marketing OCU to the many people of Oxfordshire who still don’t know we exist!  Or helping to promote membership amongst friends, local groups, or to employees of the local firms who have signed up for Payroll Deduction.  Much more on volunteer roles here.

Current Board members will be at the AGM and you may want to talk to one of us then. Check who we are here!

2016 AGM and 10th anniversary

As OCU begins its 10th anniversary year we are celebrating both growth in members and increased financial stability, as you may see in the local press.  This year’s Annual General Meeting was a bit special too, with a guest speaker from local Oxford company Ethex and a free lunch.  All members were welcome to join us at the Friends’ Meeting House, 43 St Giles, Oxford OX1 3LW, on Saturday 16th April at 11.30am.

We issued this AGM 2016 press release to the local media and would be glad for it to be shared more widely.  It has been a great 12 months and we should be looking to spread the word and build on our strength!

The Chair’s Report can be viewed or downloaded: OCU Chair’s report 2016.

Our Accounts for 2014-15 are available to view: 2015 OCU signed accounts.

We always welcome new volunteers

Some of our volunteers have found paid employment with the skills they have gained, so we have vacancies!

It could be for just a few hours a week, taking cash payments, opening new member accounts, issuing our new debit cards or dealing with enquiries.

Or perhaps you’d be interested in doing loans interviews, audit, fundraising and marketing?

Whatever your skills, we have a role for you, and we provide full training. We’re a friendly bunch, and it’s a great way to make new friends and serve your community.

Interested? Give us a call on 01865 777 757 and we’ll arrange to meet you for an informal chat and take it from there.
